  • Job Details
  • Job Summary: Prepares histologic slides and tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Utilize the Information System to receive samples, order tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports required to perform job tasks.
  • Confirms accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing processes; evaluates specimen quality and identifies when unacceptable.
  • Documents information concerning quality of specimen.
  • Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimens received from surgery.
  • Operates tissue processing equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
  • Performs tissue sectioning using microtome, prepares slides, stains and coverslips.
  • Performs special and immunohistochemical stains and procedures as necessary.
  • Performs gross examination on designated specimens using canned comments under the direction of a Pathologist.
  • Maintains filing system and records for slides, blocks and tissues.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance of equipment.
    • Job Requirements
    • Must be qualified to perform high complexity testing according to CLIA 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications.
    • ASCP certification required.
    • Flu and COVID Vaccination required.
      • Schedule Information
      • Work at other Mercy facilities performing the same functions, as required.
      • Work alternate shifts, weekends and holidays as needed to adequately provide services.
